Why do we love this whisky?

The beauty of this 21 year old single malt lies in triple cask finish. Glenlivet has sourced their oak casks from across Europe to produce pure perfection. Oloroso sherry casks from the south of Spain known for its nutty and caramelised notes, Tronçais Cognac oak from the forests outside of Burgundy provide structure and length. Last but certainly not least is vintage Colheita port casks from Douro give an unsurpassable depth. This whisky is a slice of history and geography right on your shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

The triple cask finish represents a masterclass in wood management, with each cask type contributing distinct characteristics that create extraordinary complexity. The Oloroso sherry casks from Spain impart rich nutty and caramelised flavours, while the Tronçais Cognac oak from French forests adds structural backbone and extended finish. The vintage Colheita port casks from Portugal's Douro region provide the final layer of depth, creating a whisky that showcases the terroir of three different European wine regions in one bottle.

This flavour profile demonstrates the beautiful balance achieved through extended maturation and careful cask selection. The chocolate notes likely emerge from the Oloroso sherry casks, providing rich, dark fruit undertones, while the gingerbread characteristics come from the interaction between the spirit and various oak types, creating warm spice complexity. The pear notes add a fresh, orchard fruit brightness that prevents the whisky from becoming overly heavy, creating a medium-bodied dram that's both indulgent and refreshing.

Tronçais oak is considered among the finest cooperage wood in the world, sourced from ancient French forests near Burgundy that have been managed for centuries. This particular oak is prized for its tight grain structure, which allows for slower, more controlled extraction of tannins and flavours compared to American oak. In whisky maturation, Tronçais oak contributes elegant structure, subtle vanilla notes, and remarkable length on the palate, making it a premium choice for luxury expressions like this 21-year-old.

The 'Sample Room' designation typically refers to a special selection or experimental series where master distillers showcase exceptional cask combinations or unique maturation techniques. These expressions often represent the distillery's most innovative work, allowing them to explore different finishing methods and cask types beyond their core range. For Glenlivet, this likely indicates a carefully curated whisky that demonstrates their expertise in wood management and represents the pinnacle of their craft.

Two decades of maturation allows the whisky to develop extraordinary complexity and smoothness, with the harsh edges of young spirit completely mellowed. During this extended period, the whisky undergoes continuous interaction with the wood, developing deeper colour, richer mouthfeel, and more integrated flavours. The angel's share (evaporation) concentrates the remaining liquid, while oxidation creates new flavour compounds, resulting in a sophisticated dram where fruit, spice, and oak elements are perfectly harmonised rather than competing.
