Why do we love this whisky?

Dating back to 1794, the facility at Oban is one of the oldest whisky distilleries in the world. It's also one of the smallest in Scotland, with only two pot stills. This provenance and limited output has given Oban a reputation for exceptionally well-crafted single malts. The last bastion on the western mainland before the Hebrides, Oban stands as a stalwart of highland malt, and hopefully will remain for hundreds of years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

This special release showcases Oban's signature coastal character at a younger age than their typical 14-year-old flagship. The 11-year maturation allows the distillery's maritime influence to shine through more prominently, with the sea air and salt spray from the harbour creating a distinctive interplay with the Highland characteristics. Special releases like this often feature unique cask selections or finishing techniques that highlight different aspects of Oban's terroir.

Oban's prestige stems from its remarkable heritage dating to 1794 and its unique position as one of Scotland's smallest commercial distilleries, operating just two copper pot stills. This limited production capacity, combined with nearly 230 years of whisky-making tradition, creates an exclusivity that's increasingly rare in modern Scotch production. The distillery's location on Scotland's west coast, serving as the gateway to the Hebrides, gives their whiskies a distinctive maritime character that's impossible to replicate elsewhere.

This Oban expression delivers a complex medium-bodied profile that balances Highland richness with coastal influences. The cinnamon provides warming spice notes that complement the creamy vanilla sweetness, while tropical fruit elements add an unexpected brightness that's characteristic of Oban's unique microclimate. The interplay between these flavours creates a sophisticated dram that evolves on the palate, showcasing how Scotland's diverse regional characteristics can converge in a single distillery.

Serve this Oban neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and medium-bodied texture. A few drops of room-temperature water can help open up the tropical fruit notes and soften the cinnamon spice, allowing the vanilla undertones to emerge more prominently. The coastal influence in Oban whiskies means they pair beautifully with seafood or can be enjoyed as a contemplative dram while watching the sunset.

This Oban offers an excellent introduction to Highland single malts due to its approachable medium body and balanced flavour profile. The familiar vanilla and cinnamon notes provide comfort for newcomers, while the tropical fruit elements and subtle maritime influence introduce more complex characteristics without being overwhelming. As a special release from such a historic distillery, it also provides an educational gateway into understanding how location, tradition, and craftsmanship influence whisky character.
