Why do we love this whisky?

This single malt is one for the top shelf. Made using Macallan's unwavering attention to detail and quality, with an experimental exploration into using two different types of oak casks. The resulting nectar has the sweetness and spice that one associates with American oak, but with added depth and rigour imparted from sherry casks. This is a complex, moreish Highland malt from the heart of whisky-land, Speyside.

Vanilla sponge, toasted almonds, warm mulling spices (ginger/clove) and stewed apples and pears are all perfectly balanced in this super premium drop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cask-strength means this Macallan is bottled directly from the barrel without dilution, typically ranging from 55-65% alcohol by volume. This preserves the whisky's full intensity and allows you to control the dilution yourself with water. The higher proof delivers more concentrated flavours and a warming, robust mouthfeel that showcases the distillery's craftsmanship in its purest form.

The dual-cask maturation combines American oak's vanilla sweetness and spice with European sherry casks' rich, fruity depth. American oak contributes those vanilla sponge and toasted almond notes, while sherry casks add complexity through dried fruit characteristics and deeper colour. This marriage creates a more nuanced whisky than single-cask maturation, balancing the bright, sweet American oak influence with the sophisticated richness of sherry seasoning.

Speyside is Scotland's most densely populated whisky region, home to over half of Scotland's distilleries including prestigious names like Macallan. The region's soft water from the River Spey and moderate climate create ideal conditions for producing elegant, complex single malts. Speyside whiskies are renowned for their balance, often featuring orchard fruits, honey, and subtle spice - characteristics clearly evident in this Classic Cut expression.

Start by tasting it neat to appreciate the full intensity, then gradually add small amounts of room-temperature water to open up different flavour layers. The high alcohol content means even a few drops can dramatically change the profile, revealing hidden notes of stewed fruits and warm spices. Use a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the aromas, and allow it to rest for a few minutes after adding water to let the flavours integrate.

Yes, Macallan's Classic Cut is an annual limited release, with each year's expression featuring unique cask selections and slightly different flavour profiles. The 2023 edition represents that year's specific blend of American and European oak casks, making it a snapshot in time that won't be replicated. As a cask-strength expression from one of Scotland's most respected distilleries, it holds both drinking and collecting value for whisky enthusiasts.
