This incredible Japanese whisky is distilled from 100% premium rice and rested in a combination of sherry, bourbon and American white oak casks for at least 15 years. Rich and deep aromatics of yuzu plum, dark chocolate and fresh mint. A palate consisting of vanilla bean, manuka honey and a subtle smoky spice. The finish lingers with notes of sweet liquorice and toast.

Why do we love this whisky?

Situated in Japan’s sub-tropical archipelago of Okinawa, the Masahiro distillery produces whisky in warm and humid conditions which accelerates the maturation process to provide greater smoothness, depth and complexity sooner than you’d find in a scotch whisky. So with 15 years resting in barrel, you can expect an intensity of flavour profiles that are truly unique and will leave you enchanted and inspired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Okinawa's sub-tropical climate creates dramatically different maturation conditions compared to Scotland's cool, temperate environment. The warm, humid conditions accelerate the interaction between whisky and wood, allowing this 15-year expression to develop complexity and smoothness that might take decades longer in traditional Scottish distilleries. This unique terroir produces distinctly Japanese flavour profiles that showcase how geography fundamentally shapes whisky character.

Single grain whisky means it's produced at one distillery using grains other than malted barley as the primary ingredient, often including corn, wheat, or rice. Japanese distilleries frequently use locally-sourced grains that reflect their regional agriculture, creating lighter, more approachable spirits than single malts. This style allows the Masahiro distillery's unique Okinawan maturation environment to shine through without the heavier malt characteristics dominating the profile.

The accelerated maturation in Okinawa's humid climate intensifies the extraction of vanilla and caramel compounds from the oak barrels, creating those distinctive candied characteristics. Meanwhile, the Maillard reactions between sugars and amino acids during distillation and ageing develop rich chocolate undertones. The fruity elements likely emerge from ester formation during fermentation, enhanced by the tropical climate's effect on the wood's contribution to flavour development.

Winning Silver Medals at both the International Spirits Challenge and International Wine & Spirits Competition demonstrates this whisky's exceptional quality on the global stage. These competitions feature blind tastings by industry experts, meaning the whisky succeeded purely on merit against international competitors. The consistent 90-point scores across both competitions indicate reliable excellence and suggest this expression represents outstanding value in the premium Japanese whisky category.

Absolutely - the medium-bodied profile and single grain style make this an excellent introduction to Japanese whisky craftsmanship. The candied and fruity notes provide approachable sweetness, while the chocolate elements add complexity without overwhelming intensity. The 15-year maturation has smoothed any harsh edges, creating a refined drinking experience that showcases Japanese whisky's distinctive character while remaining accessible to those transitioning from other spirits or exploring whisky for the first time.
