Why do we love this whisky?

“Kaijin” directly translates to “mysterious person” in Japanese, but more specifically refers to a long-feared sea monster that resided off the shores of Okinawa in the Edo period - it is said that sailors would drink Shochu (a distilled rice spirit) for strength to fight off the Kaijin, but a short while after the Edo period ended, whisky swept the nation and Masahiro Distillery was born. From its inception in 1883 they have been handcrafting spirits such as awamori and whisky using the very same method they do today! Aged in a blend of ex sherry and bourbon casks, and blended from both grain and vintage malt, this drop perfectly encapsulates the unique world of Japanese whisky.

Frequently Asked Questions

Japanese whisky combines traditional Scottish techniques with uniquely Japanese elements like local water sources and climate conditions. Kaijin's aging in both ex-sherry and bourbon casks creates a distinctive flavour profile that balances Western influences with Japanese precision. The light-bodied character reflects Japan's preference for subtlety and harmony, making it more approachable than many heavier Western whiskies.

Kaijin translates to 'mysterious person' but specifically refers to a feared sea monster from Okinawan waters during the Edo period. Sailors would drink shochu for courage to face this creature, but when whisky arrived in Japan, it replaced traditional spirits. Masahiro Distillery, established in 1883, honours this transition from ancient fears to modern craftsmanship through their whisky-making tradition.

The combination of ex-sherry and bourbon cask aging creates layers of butterscotch sweetness, vanilla smoothness, and oaky depth. These flavours work together harmoniously rather than competing, reflecting Japanese whisky's emphasis on balance. The light-bodied nature means these flavours are elegant and refined rather than overwhelming, making it perfect for both neat sipping and cocktail mixing.

The Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Silver at the International Spirits Challenge are prestigious international recognitions that validate the quality against global competition. These awards are particularly meaningful for Japanese whisky, as they demonstrate that traditional Japanese distilling methods can compete with established whisky-producing nations. Both competitions are highly respected in the spirits industry for their rigorous judging standards.

The light-bodied profile and balanced flavour combination of butterscotch, vanilla, and oak make this an excellent introduction to Japanese whisky. Unlike heavily peated or high-proof whiskies that can overwhelm newcomers, Kaijin offers complexity without intimidation. The award-winning quality ensures you're experiencing authentic Japanese whisky craftsmanship, while the approachable character makes it perfect for developing your palate.
