Bold and balanced, this second iteration of Drumshanbo’s Galánta dives right in. Godlen caramel, toasty nuttiness, and rich coffee undertones lead through to a palate of honeyed sweetness and spicy baked apple, bringing warmth and depth through a rounded and complete finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

This whiskey marks a historic revival for Irish whiskey production in the western province of Connacht, where no single malt had been distilled since before 1917. The Shed Distillery's achievement represents not just a return to traditional whiskey-making in this region, but also showcases how modern Irish distilleries are reclaiming lost heritage while innovating with local ingredients like Barra oats.

The locally sourced Barra oats are blended with traditional Irish barley to create a distinctive creamy complexity that sets this whiskey apart from standard barley-only expressions. Oats contribute natural oils and proteins that enhance mouthfeel and add subtle nutty undertones, complementing the toffee and dried apricot notes developed during bourbon cask maturation.

Single-use bourbon casks provide optimal flavour extraction because they've only held one previous spirit, leaving maximum wood sugars and vanilla compounds available for the Irish whiskey. These American oak barrels impart the signature toffee sweetness and complement the creamy oat character, while their previous bourbon contents add layers of caramel and spice that wouldn't be as pronounced in heavily used cooperage.

Triple distillation is a hallmark of Irish whiskey tradition that creates exceptional smoothness and purity by removing more congeners and impurities than the double distillation common in Scotch whisky. This process concentrates the desirable flavour compounds while maintaining the delicate balance between the creamy oat character and the bourbon cask influences, resulting in a more refined and approachable spirit.

Produced in the shadow of Sliabh an Iarainn (The Iron Mountain) in County Leitrim, this whiskey benefits from the pristine water sources and clean air of rural Ireland's mountainous terrain. The location's mineral-rich environment and traditional agricultural heritage provide ideal conditions for both sourcing quality local ingredients like the Barra oats and creating the perfect maturation climate for developing complex flavours.
