Corowa distillery, situated on the banks of the Murray River on New South Wales' side, is fast becoming the benchmark mainland whisky countrywide. The Bosque Verde uses seasoned American oak barrels previously used to mature fine Australian tawny. This provides a generous framework that fleshes out and broadens its complex flavour profile. Expect aromatics of maraschino cherry, freshly sliced pears and rum & raisin chocolate. The palate delivers soft spice of cinnamon and cedar and hints of almond. The finish is long and smooth with a lingering vanilla sweetness.

Why do we love this whisky?

“Bosque Verde” is Gaelic for Green Grove, the name of Corowa’s founders family farm and a nod to whisky’s Scottish roots. Utilising American oak barrels that have held Aussie tawny, Corowa has crafted a delightfully generous dram that presents similarly to fine Scotch aged in Port barrels, with an Aussie twist. Truly the pioneers of mainland Aussie whisky, this is a dram to get into while it's still around.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Bosque Verde draws inspiration from Scottish whisky traditions, it's uniquely Australian in character. The key difference lies in its maturation - it uses American oak barrels that previously held Australian tawny fortified wine, creating flavours similar to Scotch aged in Port barrels but with distinctly local characteristics. This innovative approach combines Old World techniques with New World ingredients, resulting in a whisky that bridges Scottish heritage with Australian terroir.

Corowa Distilling holds the distinction of being one of the first mainland Australian whisky producers, establishing the foundation for what has become a thriving domestic whisky industry. Their pioneering spirit extends beyond just being early adopters - they've consistently pushed boundaries by experimenting with local ingredients and unique maturation techniques. This innovative approach has helped establish Australian whisky as a legitimate category on the world stage, earning international recognition and paving the way for other mainland distilleries.

The use of American oak barrels that previously held Australian tawny creates a complex layering of flavours that sets this whisky apart. Tawny wines are known for their oxidative ageing process, which imparts rich, nutty characteristics and enhances the wood's natural vanilla and spice notes. This results in the prominent caramel, chocolate, and cinnamon flavours, while adding depth and sweetness that complements the whisky's medium body. The combination creates a more approachable and fruit-forward profile than traditional bourbon barrel-aged whiskies.

Bosque Verde, meaning 'Green Grove' in Gaelic, pays homage to the founders' family farm while acknowledging whisky's Scottish heritage. This name reflects the distillery's philosophy of honouring tradition while embracing their Australian identity. The 'green grove' imagery also suggests the lush, fertile environment where the whisky is crafted, connecting the product to its specific place of origin and the agricultural roots of the founding family.

This whisky has achieved remarkable success across major international competitions, earning gold medals from prestigious organisations including the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the Australian Distillers & Spirits Association. The silver medals from the World Whiskies Awards and IWSC further validate its quality on the global stage. This level of recognition is particularly impressive for an Australian whisky, demonstrating that local producers can compete with established whisky regions and helping to elevate the reputation of Australian spirits internationally.
