We all dream of travelling to Bunnahabhain's remote Islay distillery to taste their celebrated drops direct from the cask. But that's days of travel, thousands of dollars and 10kg of scotch eggs around the waist just to get there. Luckily, the good people at Bunnahabhain have saved us the trouble with this cask-strength bottling of their delicious, unpeated 12 year old wonder! Buttery, malty, with toffee and sherried fruit notes. Absolutely delightful.

Why do we love this whisky?

Bunnahabhain, Islay's most remote distillery, is often looked over by tourists due to its proximity to... well... no one. Thankfully, you can bring the distillery tasting experience home with this celebrated cask-release.

From 1883 onwards, Bunnahabhain has been producing exceptional spirit from one the world's most revered regions. Bucking the Islay trend, Bunna specialise in unpeated malts, but through their use of traditional methods (direct-fired stills - a very good sign), they still capture the power and drive of Islay, without the need for peat smoke. This is an exceptional whisky, and and excellent opportunity for any lover of unique drams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike most Islay distilleries that heavily rely on peat smoke, Bunnahabhain specialises in unpeated single malts while still capturing the island's distinctive character. Their use of traditional direct-fired copper stills creates a unique flavour profile that showcases Islay's maritime influence without the typical smoky intensity. This approach allows the natural caramel and vanilla notes to shine through, making it an excellent introduction to Islay whiskies for those who prefer less peated expressions.

Cask strength means this whisky is bottled at its natural strength straight from the barrel, without dilution with water. This typically results in a higher alcohol content (usually 50-60% ABV) compared to standard bottlings at 40-43%. The higher proof delivers more intense flavours and allows you to control the dilution yourself - you can enjoy it neat for maximum impact or add a few drops of water to open up different flavour compounds and aromas.

Given its cask strength nature and medium body, this Bunnahabhain is best served neat in a tulip-shaped glass or Glencairn to concentrate the aromas. Start with small sips to appreciate the full intensity, then consider adding a few drops of room temperature water to unlock different layers of caramel and vanilla. The 12-year maturation provides excellent balance, so avoid ice which would mute the carefully developed flavours from over a decade in oak casks.

The caramel and vanilla notes, combined with the maritime character of this unpeated Islay malt, pair beautifully with rich, savoury dishes. Try it alongside aged cheeses, dark chocolate desserts, or grilled seafood to complement its medium body. The lack of peat smoke makes it more versatile than heavily peated Islays, working particularly well with caramelised or roasted flavours that echo the whisky's own oak-derived sweetness.

Yes, this cask strength 2023 release offers a more intense and unfiltered experience compared to the standard 12-year-old bottling. While both share the same 12-year maturation period, the cask strength version retains all the natural oils and compounds that would normally be filtered out, resulting in a richer mouthfeel and more concentrated flavours. Each annual cask strength release can also vary slightly depending on the specific barrels selected, making this a unique snapshot of Bunnahabhain's craftsmanship.
