Why do we love this whisky?

The Isle of Jura, off Scotland's west coast and right next to Islay, is home to only 200 odd inhabitants, and one of the world's most prolific and recognisable distilleries. From the iconic figure 8 bottle shape, to the delightful malts produced, Jura has truly cemented itself as a household name.

This 14 year old drop has received the rockstar treatment in the distillery, with time aged in ex-Bourbon casks before being finished in ex-American rye casks. The result is a whisky that has earned higher praise than any other sub $100 whisky we've seen in some time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Jura operates on a remote Scottish island with only 200 inhabitants, creating an incredibly intimate production environment that's rare in the whisky world. Located next to the famous Islay region, Jura benefits from similar maritime influences but maintains its own distinct character. The distillery's isolation means every bottle represents a true craft tradition, with the iconic figure-8 bottle shape becoming as recognizable as the liquid inside.

The dual maturation process starts with traditional ex-bourbon barrels that impart vanilla and caramel notes, then moves to American rye whiskey casks for finishing. This rye cask influence adds distinctive spice complexity and enhances the cinnamon notes, while complementing the natural apple and honey flavors. The result is a more layered, sophisticated whisky that bridges Scottish tradition with American whiskey innovation.

With 95 points from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible and 92 points from Whisky Advocate, this 14-year-old represents exceptional value in the premium whisky category. The combination of optimal aging time, innovative cask finishing, and Jura's maritime terroir creates complexity typically found in much more expensive bottles. Critics particularly praise how the rye cask finishing elevates the traditional Jura profile without overwhelming its inherent island character.

The apple, cinnamon, and honey flavor profile makes this whisky exceptional with rich desserts like apple tart or crème brûlée, where the rye spice complements caramelized sugars. For savory pairings, try it with aged cheeses or charcuterie, as the full body stands up to bold flavors while the honey notes provide balance. The maritime influence also makes it surprisingly good with smoked salmon or other cured seafood.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the dual cask maturation aromas. Add a few drops of water to open up the rye spice notes and reveal more of the underlying honey sweetness. The full-bodied nature means it can handle a single ice cube if preferred, though this may mute some of the subtle apple and cinnamon nuances that make this expression special.
