Why do we love this gin?

From Château de Bonbonnet in Cognac, Citadelle Gin is a true testament to the art of distillation. Not only was this gin born from a recipe that dates back to the 18th century discovered in the archives of the Calais Citadelle in Dunkirk, it also utilises one of the oldest distillation methods in history by being batch crafted in copper pot stills over open-flame. Being the illustrious name that Maison Ferrand is in the world of Cognac, it’s no wonder that they use this same meticulous method in their gin, imparting smoothness and richness throughout, and bringing a depth and texture that sets it apart.

Whether sipped neat, stirred into a martini, or brightened with tonic, French artistry flows through every sip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Citadelle stands apart through its authentic French heritage and traditional production methods. Made by Maison Ferrand, renowned Cognac producers, it's distilled in copper pot stills over open flames using an 18th-century recipe discovered in historical archives. This old-world technique, combined with their Cognac expertise, creates exceptional smoothness and depth that mass-produced gins simply can't match.

While excellent in classic gin and tonics, Citadelle's refined character truly shines in stirred cocktails like martinis where its smoothness can be appreciated. The copper pot still distillation creates enough complexity to enjoy neat or on the rocks, allowing you to taste the subtle interplay of citrus, herbs, and spices that define this French expression.

The flavor profile showcases a harmonious blend of citrus brightness, herbaceous complexity, and warming spices typical of traditional French gin recipes. The 18th-century formulation likely includes classic juniper alongside Mediterranean botanicals that reflect the terroir of the Cognac region. The copper pot still distillation preserves these delicate botanical essences while adding a characteristic richness.

The open-flame copper pot still method is crucial because it allows for precise temperature control and creates gentle, even heating that preserves delicate botanical oils. This traditional technique, used by Cognac producers for centuries, prevents the harsh extraction that can occur with modern column stills. The result is a gin with remarkable smoothness and complexity that reflects true artisanal craftsmanship.

The Spirit of the Year World Spirits Award and Gold Medal from Bartender Spirits Awards demonstrate exceptional quality recognized by both industry experts and professional bartenders. These accolades are particularly significant because they evaluate not just taste, but also production methods, authenticity, and overall craftsmanship. For bartenders especially, this recognition indicates a gin that performs consistently in cocktails while offering distinctive character.
