Take one of the world's best-selling VSOP Cognacs, finish it in ex-Bourbon casks. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? You may be surprised to find that Martell are the very first to do just that! A bold move, considering they technically can't call this "Cognac" as soon as it touches the barrel (all Cognac must be aged in local French oak). But the result is absolutely sensational. Rich, rounded and silky with some sweet baking spices mixed in with fruitcake and caramel.

Why do we love this cognac?

Martell, the oldest of the famed "Big Four" Cognac houses (alongside Rémy Martin, Courvoisier and Hennessy), is an iconic powerhouse of France's most famous spirit. This VSOP, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, is a masterclass in quality. Rich, velvety, elegant, this delicious drops shows vanilla, stewed fruits, caramelised oranges, and nutty undertones all in perfect balance. Santé!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Blue Swift undergoes a unique finishing process in ex-bourbon barrels, which is quite revolutionary for cognac. This American oak influence adds distinctive vanilla and caramel notes that complement the traditional French eaux-de-vie, creating a bridge between cognac and whisky flavour profiles. The bourbon barrel finishing softens the spirit while introducing new aromatic compounds that wouldn't typically be found in cognac aged solely in Limousin oak.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped snifter at room temperature to fully appreciate the complex aromatics, or add a single ice cube to slightly chill and open up the flavours. The bourbon barrel influence makes it particularly versatile for cocktails - try it in an elevated Old Fashioned or Sidecar. The vanilla and caramel notes from the ex-bourbon finishing pair beautifully with dark chocolate or aged cheeses for a sophisticated tasting experience.

VSOP stands for 'Very Superior Old Pale' and indicates that the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend is at least four years old, though many components are typically much older. This classification sits between VS (minimum two years) and XO (minimum ten years) in the cognac hierarchy. The extended ageing allows the spirit to develop greater complexity and smoothness, with the oak imparting rich tannins and the time allowing harsh alcoholic edges to mellow into the elegant profile Martell is renowned for.

Martell, founded in 1715, is actually the oldest of the four major cognac houses and has shaped the industry for over 300 years. Their reputation stems from consistent quality, innovative techniques, and their signature style that emphasises elegance and finesse over power. Being part of the 'Big Four' alongside Hennessy, Rémy Martin, and Courvoisier means they control a significant portion of global cognac production and have the resources to maintain extensive aged stock reserves essential for consistent blending.

The honey, nutty, and raisin characteristics make this cognac exceptional with rich desserts like crème brûlée, dark chocolate tart, or fruit-based puddings. The bourbon barrel influence also pairs wonderfully with savoury elements - try it with aged Gruyère, roasted nuts, or even grilled meats. The caramelised orange notes mentioned in the tasting profile create beautiful harmony with duck à l'orange or pork dishes with fruit glazes, while the vanilla undertones complement cigars for a classic post-dinner ritual.
